Thanks again to Mobil 1 motor oil for sponsoring last week's video and hosting us at their Engine Test Center - since we like their products, we've included them in this episode too. Visit AutoZone to find the right high-quality Mobil 1 synthetic oil for you: bit.ly/38EvoLT
Great so you got your first project car, now it’s time to make sure that it is ready for some mods! Before we throw any new bits at our Mazda Miata we want to make sure that it is in good running condition and healthy. So, we will do some basic but very necessary maintenance on our project car and you should do the same. We will talk about and show you how to DIY change your engine oil, coolant, power steering fluid, diff fluid, brake fluid, and transmission fluid. We’ll also cover air filters, fuel filter, belts, and spark plugs. Even if you don’t have a project car these are all routine basic things that you can do yourself to keep your car running for a long time and also save some money!
Money Pit goes hands-on in the garage with Zach Jobe as he shows you the fundamental principles of how cars work, and how to apply your DIY knowledge to your very own project car --all using our very own 1994 Mazda Miata.

  • or I can pay $60 and a garage mechanic will do all those for me. Too much dirty work with tools I don't have. Or just bring it back to where you bought it (if it's a new car) and they do it for free.

  • I never actually had to change the oil in my '94 Cavalier because it had an oil leak that required a new quart every two weeks. Never seemed to have a problem so we left it alone and called it an automated oil change. Even in other cars, we go tens of thousands of miles without an oil change. Bad? Sure. Convenient? Definitely. Of course, we're always wondering why our vehicles seem to need constant work done to them...

  • Pro tip from a mechanic. Use the correct type of spark plugs for your car. If they call for iridium spark plugs. USE iridium spark plugs. Also do not over tighten your belt. Too tight will cause belt noise and can burn out components such as alternator and AC compressor.

My thought is that the brake bleed generally starts from the pistol/caliper farthest from the master cylinder. I’m sure that you’re aware of the multitude of procedures for bleeding brakes and some ways of bleeding don’t apply - such as brake systems with IR valves in them Great incisive video. Thanks 😊

  • As an Aircraft Maintenance Technician I am amazed by how well you did these maintenances, and the maintenance definition on the start of the video was really nice. There are a couple of differences between the car and the aircraft worlds, like the AC system on the helicopter I work has the compressors driven by the main gearbox by a quill and belts system, the tensioning method is very different, we have to be so sure that the correct tension is applied that we have to use a tensiometer that tells in which frequency the belt is. Following the correct torque values is also mandatory for every single bolt we fasten, very glad you spread that kind of knowledge in the video. Standard practices and following the manuals and procedures makes up a good maintenance technician. Greetings from Brazil.
