Everyone needs help with their car sometimes. But if you're on the hunt for factual information or helpful technical knowledge, online forums like Quora.com are NOT where you should begin your search. In this video, Nolan is joined by host of Money Pit, Zach Jobe. Together they scour the dark depths of Quora for some of the worst (and funniest) car advice the world wide web has to offer.

  • Alright so maybe the tire guy thought the question was about literally mounting a tire on a wheel. They get a pass...for now 👀

    • Sorry guys I commented before reading the comments dude was talking about a tire on wheel swap thats not that big a deal on a freightliner or peterbuilt even your 4500 series trucks its not that big a deal i think you call it a double lipped bead but on big rigs tire gets real low. Not flat it just comes of the bead they operate at 100-115 psi Ive seen and I been driving a lazer spot all over a big scrap yard all day when I wasnt in a material handler or my f150 picking up junk cars with a wench trailer

    • What he said about the sealant and pump is very common these days. Less and less cars have spare wheels these days to reduce weight for emissions targets. If you're lucky there may be a space saver wheel but that is becoming rarer.

    • Jobe is right about the tire guys hating the slime in the tires. Its messy and gets every. Also mounting a tire does not require a lot of strength at all to do

  • Welllll the dealership question was actually answered correctly. But that's usually if you talk the talk and then can actually be serious about it. If you go in there begging them for a deal and you're not financially great. They won't take you seriously becuase they can just wait for someone else that's actually gonna buy it quickly But if you say go with this strategy: I got a check in my wallet, I want this vehicle for $_____ within the week or else I'll call the next dealership and give them my money. I'll be expecting your call" (that's not a quote on quote but you get the point. This has worked in my family many, many times not kidding) I know this limits the everyone aspect but it works

  • I listened to the neutral bomb advice when I was much, much younger and far less experienced. I snapped a CV shaft. Also discovered that my T-bird's parking break cable had snapped, which I apparently missed in my excitement when buying the car. Had to sit in the car with my foot on the brakes for an hour until a tow truck came. Happened to be 30 minutes out of the city. DON'T DO NEUTRAL BOMBS.

  • Unpopular opinion: If you ask whether engine knock is a bad thing and how to fix it - you probably do need to take it to a professional. It shows an extreme lack of experience with engines that you didn't crap your parents as soon as you heard the knock and fixing it is probably well outside of your skillset. That's not an insult to anybody, I couldn't fix it myself. I just think if you want to learn to swim, jumping into the middle of a waterspout is a bad way to go about it

  • I worked as a tire changer for 2 years when I was younger and YES we would get super pissed if you didn't tell us about the fix a flat in the tire. Most people don't even know that its super flammable number one and two, normally we bust the bead while there is still a little air in the tire and if you do that with liquid in it, you guessed it, it goes all over your legs mostly but sometimes your shirt. Its a mess and it never works. If you are going to do something like that, get one of those old school push in plugs and use an air compressor that uses your cigarette lighter socket instead

  • Here's the best car advice I could ever give anyone: maybe every second time you fill your car up at the servo, check the tyres, check the oil, check the coolant, and fill the washer bottle and give the wipers a wipe with wet paper towel or cloth. The wiper thing is just to help it last longer, but the oil, coolant, and tyres are the most important things. Doing these three things eliminates probably 90% of breakdowns straight away.

  • See I dunno about that "don't negotiatie" because when I bought my Fiesta I needed the car that day to be able to keep going to work and so I made no haggling attempts. I showed up with a pre-approved loan from my bank for what they advertised the car at and instead of accepting that the dealership spent 5-6 hours making me sit there waiting angrily before presenting me with a ford credit agreement for 5 grand more than my loan which by then having to work the next day with the car I had been driving now inoperable, without enough time to hunt down another fiesta I signed their papers so not negotiating didn't do me a lick of good. The salesman also stayed well away from me while they were "calculating" my loan stuff. When I needed a bigger car I went to the same dealer and told them what I could afford per month and they offered me a Focus for $145 more per month than I told them I was capable of paying at the time. That made plenty of acrimony between me and my Ford dealership.

Just a quick 30 minute or hour internet search can and will save you hundreds and/or thousands. But if you got to spend days or weeks on Google, KGfun, Diagrams, Blueprints, Charts, asking your EX's, mom's, boyfriend's, husband's pet monkey-cat that's missing an eye and got half a testicile how to fix something...then just let someone else fix the damn thing!
