Why Everyone Wanted the Worst Car in the World
The Yugo is widely regarded as the worst car ever. It was poorly constructed, nowhere near reliable, and not so easy on the eyes. The Yugo was the butt of every joke and the junker in every garage. But for all its shortcomings, it sold like hotcakes when it arrived in the U.S. In this episode of Wheelhouse, Nolan tells the story of the Yugo's creation and makes the case for updating its reputation from worst car to huge success.

So I definitely got a big part of this story wrong: the assertion that Yugoslavia was part of the Soviet Union. This Is incorrect. In the West, this assumption can be traced back to Yugoslavia’s formation in 1943. During WWII, the Allies: The US, UK and USSR supported Yugoslavia’s fight against the fascist Axis occupation. We just kinda assumed they stayed allied with the USSR, but that’s not what happened. After the war, relations between Yugoslavia and the USSR fell apart, with Yugoslavia denouncing Stalinism completely and forming its own socialist government. Yugoslavia was in fact on the Western edge of the Iron Curtain, and maintained a delicate balancing act between Western and Eastern bloc countries. According to globalvoices.org “its independence from both the Eastern and the Western blocs was a key feature of its national identity.” I sincerely apologize for the error and for any offense it may have caused; and I will be more diligent and discerning in my research moving forward. Thanks for your time. -Nolan
Apology accepted! I was just on my way to diss you for saying that xD
you got it all wrong... at least the history part
I was about to start ranting but i saw this comment 😌
@Building on a Budget Models Tito jedan jedini yugo is the best car ever created right after golf 2
You forgot that Kosovo is serbia.
I feel all edjimacated now that I know this.
Крагујевац. Пичко.
Koliko nas ima ajde 🇧🇦🇭🇷🇷🇸😁
Yugoslavia had a history of making export goods worse than stuff for domestic sale. So I wouldn't be surprised if Yugos here in Yugoslavia were better then the US ones.
Yugo of America folded because Yugoslavia folded.
It has a soul u just gotta love it or hate it and i wonder how much better zastava would get better today.
I'm from Serbia, and i have to say, it's fun to drive a Yugo, it's cheap, around 200-300 usd, and it's better to sit in a car, than on a bike :'D P.s. Pozdrav svima sa Balkana, od Srbije do Slovenije ✌️
Bruh you should first get some real informations, than talk
When someone’s talking about something that he’s doesn’t know nothing about. What a ignoramus.
Yugoslavia was not soviet block tho
1:24 the Kosovo is and always will be part of Serbia. Don't cut it off again.
Nothing to do with the point of the video, I know, but that Genesis gag? That wasn't a Genesis song.
YUGO IS BEST CAR!!!
The best cars people can purchase in the 1980s are the 1986 to 1989 Chevrolet Camaro IROC Z and Ford Mustang GT same years in terms of performance and horsepower.
Hat er gerade Fussballtable gesagt 😅
You spelled zastava wrong. Its not zastAva its zAstava. I just wanted to say that.
If only they were sold in finland, Id propaply own one. My dream car, just bare bones car without anything useless shit cars these days are filled. Would love to own one. Its like Lada Samara here in finland, cheap bare bones communist car that other half loved and other half loved to hate. I respect this kind of cars, less is more. All this safety and comfort shit is useless 😃
Yugo terible who say that
Yugo Is best
Never heard of it, I was expecting the Lexus sc
Remember if you total a yugo its cheaper to buy a new one than repairing it
Beautiful Titolinium powered by the brotherhood and unity of thr people of Yugoslavia
Hmmm sounds like India's Maruti 800
As far as i know, the after called Yugo was the Fiat project intended to replace the 127 in the early 80's. But the design was evaluated as too old and conservative by the Fiat management, so the more modern Uno was developed by Fiat. The original design was sold to Zastava and became the Yugo
What do you call yugo going up a hill? A miracle
2:29 is a clip from my hometown
Yugoslavia wasn't part of the Soviet Union....
Fun fact - Yugoslavia was not part of the east block.
yu-go, yu-not-go
Believe it or not, Yugo vehicles that were kept here in Serbia, are actually better than the one's built for the American industry.
Than theres me from croatia listening to this and wondering why does everyone say yugoslavia was comunist hmmmmm? With my knowledge it was none of those things it was fighting against fascism and stuff like that anyways ignore this we are talking about the car however if i am wrong please correct me ty
Made by people alienated from the products of their labor, eh?
I would argue that trabant is far worse
Speaking about Yugo nobody ever mention during NATO bombing Zastava factory was crush down, with a lot of small simpatic Yugos inside.
And why it is worst car? It was a very good and useful car for that year but the problem with the fat americans is they wanted and buyed so much this car but they hate it and considered this car for the worst because it was not made in the USA.
Delete the video iam from macedonia i feel offended i feel ashamed that i followed you for so long, learn a little history my friend
jugo is a tank in the balkans.I drove juga coral 45 i drove it for fifteen years.I never stopped on the way.jugo is a beast. Btw im from serbia
True story. I was watching the evening news and a segment came on showing the first Yugo to come off the ship. It didn’t start.
Kosovo is serbia
When trying to pronounce Balkan words with C at the end, just replace C with S so it would sound like C not a K
Yugoslavia also sold you your space program which was also partly developed by the same company yugo came from.
Yugoslavia was not part of USSR man
Man you suck...at least learn what you talk about....Your pronounce is comedy central....
666K VIEWS.........
Yugoslavia wasnt part of soviet union wrong it was democratic comunistic state not to soviet union
Yugo is good
Also: The problem with driving a Yugo... ... is that the Czech engine light is always on.
Zastava makes a hell of an AK.
"YUGO - You Go but car doesn't"
0:31 "like a Lada... awful things..."
Kind of reminds of the Pepsi deal with the Soviets that ended up with Pepsi owning a bunch of Russian war ships. The Pepsi Cola Navy.
This looks like the 4x4 ADA in DayZ
Lear some history. Don't be dumb. Yugoslavia was never part of Eastern block. Also we all have cars, mostly German and French. There were car factory's for citroen, renault and vw...
What nonsense you speak smh
You are not from Balkan, you are not allowed to speak about Yugo. 😂
Again mistake, your American propaganda is wrong again. Yugoslavia was never Soviet. Communist yes but never in Soviet union. You had west (NATO today) And Soviet, and also there was a third party called independent or something like that, well we were in the middle and didn't belong to West or East. Tito was hanging out with African countries and that wasn't Soviet Union. Yugo was crappy but cost double here and was worst than version you got. We paid for your cheap import to balance the cost to factory. Also Kragujevac and Zastava have nothing with Croatia and Bosnia it's like you compare Detroit belong to California or Florida. We didn't have much but had enough factories and we had everything until your Democracy came here and that was the end of humanity here. you are the worst of the worst.
yugo 45 - yugoslavia in shits since 1945
Fact check before making a video. Yugoslavia was not aligned with the USSR.
Well, we know it in Mexico as a CARIBE.
Marshal Tito said to Soviet’s defined NO. *Soviet staged their tenks along side Hungarian border * people in Yugoslavia armed themselves to the teeth and were ready to die to defend their country *soviets turned around and went home This was in the 50s I believe’54 and I was born 1970 in Yugoslavia
We had a Zastava GTL55 in Europe, Hungary in the 90's. It was not so bad! It was even a higher level than a Lada. It was bad in the USA of course because you had a lot of bigger and better cars!
I still own and drive a yugo!
If you learn to drive Yugo you can drive anything 👊
Looks like a Maruti-Suzuki 800
Actually Yugoslavia was not in good relationship with SSR mostly. SSR try to rule it as Czechoslovakia and most of military resource of Yugoslavia was point to Soviet ruled country at that time.
Ima li brace iz Kragujevca
Jugoslavia was not in Soviet Union
Rear window heaters are installed so u can warm up when ure pusing it to start.
wow, talk about insider trading. one year after the release of the justy in japan. probably hurt his own company, but made a pretty profit for himself.
You don't know what you taking about , Yugo was my first car is Serbia , it's great vehicle .
Noah, it's still something great about yugo. When it need to be repaired, it's ultimately cheaper then any other car. So if you wanna made some compromisees it's more than fine. To do repairs just need to know what's wrong whit it, buy a spear part, and from tolls you need just screwdriver, 5 wrenches (8,10,13,17,19mm), few pieces of wire and job is done. Everybody know it's more than bad car but still love him because it's cheep and standard in Balkan is not great, speciali in the 1990s. It's simple people was happy because they can afford any car, that's the reason why is the great car. Just keep up whit nice content you are great.
I thought you know better Very disappointed in you specially with all this nonsense and mistakes Be a man and correct this rubbish or i guarantee you will loose followers
What do you call a four door Yugo? Wego
Dude... Yugoslavia was not in the Soviet Union. It had a communist regime, but not aligned 100% to the Soviet totalitarianism. That's why it was able to sell cars to the West. If you tell a Balkan person they were Soviet, you will have a lot to explain. Hehehe!
Nolan: the worst car ever yugo Reliant robin, trabant, pt cruiser: am i joke to you
Kragujevac lik citrus or cirkus idn
You did not try Yugo 65. I call it the beast. Ultimate poor people racing machine.
Yugo is actually very reliable car, and genuinely good fun with friends doing dumb stuff with the car. U can literally buy it for 150€
Kra-gu-ye-vats
1:24 KOSOVO IS SERBIA!!!
YUGOSLAVIA YUGO YUGO
I have quite a few problems with this video. First and foremost, Yugoslavia was never the part of the Soviet Union. It was socialist country, which played an important role in Cold war, so you two big shots wouldn't wreck the whole World. Please check your history facts. And that is such an important segment of this video, because much of your cultural understanding and presenting the Yugo comes from this misinformation. Moreover, it was cheaply built, but it wasn't that bad. That car is pure mechanics. You have no computer in the car, but you have a clutch and actual gearbox, something that, I have heard, Americans struggle with. Sorry for this, it may not be true. How you service Yugo is the answer how much it will serve you. You can ask that every single mechanic from the Balkans and pretty much everyone will tell you the same. Even today in Serbia we drive Yugo, and they stopped manufacturing it like 15 years ago. It is an ultimate car for rally here, many first drivers are driving it etc.
One more thing about YUGO you didn't tell: For Zastava to achieve the low selling price you mentioned, they had to reduce the quality of this car even further, so the cars you got in USA were even lower quality than the ones for home market. Also, at the time, most the production cars here were in 40-60bhp range, so lack of power wasnt so obvious as in USA. And two more things about Yugoslavia: Among those "other smaller counties" is Slovenia, which was the most developed part of Yugoslavia at the time. Yugoslavia was never Soviet (as a few other commenters pointed out). It was the only communist county that stood up against Soviet.
Yugo nowhere lol 😂
The Yugo is still such a common sight to see in Serbia. They're cheap but they never die.
Yugoslavia is not Sovet Union
I had a 1987 Yugo GV that I bought back in 2001 from a collector. I only paid like $300! I loved it! I wish I still had it.
So this is Mirage of the 80s?
They introduced the Yugo brand in Germany in 1990, but unfortunately the civil war in former jugoslavia stopped the production in 1992 and the importer went bust. I can´t even remember seeing one in the flesh and even after looking for years there is almost never one up for sale in Germany or its neighbours.
Yugo is not from the Soviet Union. Zastava is building Fiat 500L up to this date. I know a lot of pre 90'ies Zastavas that are still functional. I know there were some issues with sending cars to the US, but Zastava actually opened the doors of US market for VW and Audi and many other European manufacturers. For the Yugo, it and Škoda were the most innovative products from Eastern Block countries. In 1992, when you say Yugo closed, actually, the Yugoslavia collapsed in the four year war. And the title of the worst car ever, it was manufactured by the TopGear journalist as a sarcastic view of Balkan wars.
The one and only car that literally got blown off the Mackinac Bridge in an October 1989 gale storm.
The yugo in europe has 45hp 55hp and 65hp and its fun around the chorners
Thanks to this export business, domestic Yugos became somewhat better because, eventually, all tiny improvements for American market found their way here. Overall, main problems with Yugo were terrible build quality and lack of proper control in the factory. Concept and technologies were sound for cheap city car from that era.
I really like the the simplicity and purity of the Yugo. If it wasn't for it's poor quality and reliability, I would really buy one some day.
Well it seams like it had the same build quality as us cars back then :D
I LIKE "Tubthumping", dammit!
Yugoslavia wasn't part of the Soviet Union, not geographically, not legally and wasn't even allied with them. Not all communist countries were the Soviet Union😂
What do you call a 4 door yugo ? ... Yu all go
In Serbia we had even worse car called zastava 101. Both of them was made 40 years with minor changes. And the production ended 2008, I cant tell what was the reason for that 😂😂😂
