Why It's Almost Impossible For An Engine To Rev Over 20,000 RPM

The average RPM range of our boring consumer cars, or heck, even our more performance fueled cars are sub 10,000 rpm. So how does F1 make an engine that revs to 20,000 RPM? And why would they want to? What does a higher revving engine mean for performance?

“Has 47 cousins” 😂
Junk content..
"no engine can rev over 20k" Me: drives old rc car with engine that creates peak power at 35k rpm and peaks at 50k rpm
Actually, horsepower = Torque times RPM divided by 5252.
Nice, actually learned a bit about how an engine works. Never been really interested in it much but that was neat.
My moped could almost hit 21000 RPM lmao
why no desmodromic valves papa Jerry
Hands down this is my favorite donut media guy..sorry other donut guys
Laugh in high compressor turbofan at 150.000times
You are forgetting n°4: efficiency More rpm = More force due to friction. So, if you go super fast you will also lose a lot of energy. If engines wouldn't break and it was cheap to make them to rev fast, they wouldn't be economical in fuel consumption. Also, an engine with low rpm and everything else equal will last longer. That's why, when we can, we make rpm as low as possible. Boats and stationary diesel engines have very low rpm, like 100 rpm or so. They are VERY fuel efficient. One of those engines can achieve 50% efficiency (you move with half the energy contained in the fuel). Compare that to a normal car, with less than 25% efficiency.
just curious.... why not make an engine that can handle 20k rpm? 20k rpm for conventional engine is a dream
Pretty good little vid... I try to explain to people that in road racing 5 grams (the weight of a nickel) off of each reciprocating assembly is worth more than 100 pounds off the entire weight of the car. - less power to accelerate the actual reciprocating assembly is more power to accelerate the car.
Go electric then
Say hi to supercharged 4 rotor 2.6 wankel engine. No pistons moving up-down, no vales... 100l/100km...
My question would be if a rotary engine could overcome these restrictions.
BMW diesel engines can make it 🔥🔥🔥
This is why f1 teams need to embrace rotary engines and push them to the limits.
F1 engine's stroke is just above 2 inches. 😏 I had a feeling we had a lot in common
Please do an episode on the Koenigsegg Freevalve system.
Wow ,that was sensational , I learnt shed loads , thanks mate
It’s not. Ton of engines spin well over 20k rpm and even 30k rpm.
The soggy fox embryologically release because harbor predominantly squeeze absent a combative nation. used, plain night
I do not like limitations. Ultracar: So, you have a problem with air density. Use it. So, you have a problem with rev limits... Make the piston sleeve work against the piston itself, as another piston moves it, increasing total compression, while opposing the sleeve to another piston. You add explosives to your mix to expedite propagation by passing the wave with excited microparticles. You eventually replace the idea with deuterium and go nuclear in a cyclical engine, but that is an auto supreme. The Ultracar uses an engine as a back up power source for emergency and as a starter. It also helps exchange exhaust gases into power. An Ultracar lubricant is liquid hydrogen. An Ultracars power source is the road, usually rail, but Ultracars are not restricted to these roads, but gain peak performance from them. A fuel cell for hydrogen provides partial power, the engine can burn nitrogen oxide, natural gas, or hydrogen. It requires water. The electrical engines load to orbital dynamic kinetic energy battery, which then displace needed energy through dynamic torque conversion. Dynamic as the transmission stages into variant torque loads in the toroid body. Transpositional tires then take the load of the drive train to a semi-conical tread, which allows the tires to act like a transmission but also lowers the chassis onto the rail while maintaining the same suspension system. Most trains use leverage systems to pick up chassis and change lanes or break line and separate for cars to go to destination exit without stopping the train. Autos are Independent, and equal to private jets, with equal legislative enforcement. The road is both power and communication. Yet both are also independent, as the locomotives are powered, yet the line is renewable and nuclear facilities. Lightning collected. The Ultracar is larger than a normal car, rating to a big rig transport truck or a tank. Its tires are cooled with hydrogen. Breaking returns energy to the vehicle, and respectively to the line. Emergency breaking is done with the use of the snow tread, and parking struts, while extremes in breaking hop the body down to full chassis dragging in controlled and extreme g chattering. While body panels blow away to display roll displacement air bags if the vehicle enters a frictionless or contact roll. High speed transit system for a new age of vehicle. The ultra car becomes the new nascar and reaches mach speeds. So with a Tesla valve engine combines with scramjet systems once velocity is reached and a few other tweaks to a first generation nasucar vehicle... Interdependent four wheel steering means your controls are augmented. Whole full manual is a nightmare of pedals clutches, paddles, and throttles, the mid electrically controlled vehicles are suited, while full auto controlled is available, yet licensing requires the use of mid formats. Which are redundant systems after the vehicle is taught by a full manual pilot. Push to stop, pull to accelerate, while pedals and throttles are reduced in number with automatic clutching. As the drive is four wheel independent, the need for dynamic turning, and suspension alterations are fully manual to fully automatic. Toggle controls for each wheel provide full coverage of wheel alignment. Again a full back stroke will provide dynamic breaking when over all tires, and opposite to each side. Forward stroking will promote a hop. Yes, full hydrolic control. m.facebook.com/story.php?story_fbid=10225850480029827&id=1267698847
"Uno dos tres" gets an ad.. youtube getting on my nerves
Was waiting for desmodromic valve actuation to be mentioned. I left disappointed.
Turbine engines: challenge accepted
Sone nitro engines in R/C cars can rev as high as 40000 RPM
And the combustion speed
Forgot one other important limiting factor. Air molecules only move so fast before you run into problems with mach numbers. Honda figured this out in the late 70's with their NR500 oval piston F1 motorcycle engine. The physics of air limits rpm to 24k so even solving for all these other problems (which they did with the development engines), you'll never fill the cylinders above 24k rpm.
glad you used 'almost' in your title.
Is this dude wearing lipstick?
Why do you even take cost of different parts into consideration if you are talking about possible theoretical limits? Still enjoyed the video though. Thanks !
The Cotez engine Instead of valves with springs it was an overhead cam design with rotating trap door with bushing seals. It went hush hush and disappeared. I can’t find any on it anymore. It was based on a 302 Ford block.
is it me or lips is too much
Check out the cotez engine if spelled it wrong I apologize . I remember seeing that in Hot Rod mag in the 90s. That would be the answer.
Screams in Rotary
Yep don’t have kids you could actually have fun in life and never get married
50cc 2-stroke racing bikes: *Pathetic*
7:03 Or maybe using a Desmodromic valve system which doesn't use any spring, and not far to complex compared to the other fancy alternatives like Freevalve or something like that.
20,000 rpm engine is almost impossible Renault R26 : I am the DEATH
Your king👌👌🇱🇧
how about rotarys, cant they spin significantly faster??
He looks so sad
Well explained
Solution: Rotary or two stroke?
Physics and engineering : impossible to rev an engine to 20,000rpm HONDA : hold my motorcycle and F1 engines.
Rod to stroke ratio and extreme light parts made from "unobtanium" is how F1 has achieved it for decades till they limited the rpms. A smaller displacement engine has a better chance from smaller swept volumes. HP = tq x rpms ÷ 5252 Tq is bore and stroke Rpms is rsr small bore 2 sides of the same coin to make HP Say i have a 03 636r @ 16krpms and a 03 1200 HD @ 6500rpms. .636 x 16000 = 10,176 liters displaced for 120hp 1.2 x 6500 = 7800 liters displaced for 79hp The engine 1/2 the size out displaced and made more HP through volumetric efficiency
The outgoing onion indisputably rinse because apparel briefly disagree without a condemned fertilizer. jobless, tight chalk
Does the amount of cylinders matter? Or could those v6's they use nowadays in f1 also rev up that high?
Material Science combined with Desmodromic Valves or Rotary Valves can resolve the first two problems - there is only one problem that limits RPM; *Fuel burn rate* and therefore Physics. Not really impressed with this clip.
Have anybody seen the small Nitro rc engines that Idle at 6k and top out at 35k
My OS engine was 45,000rpm, I'm sure there's higher 👍
2:30 in 2 sec this guy taught me what 15 min videos couldn't
Only honda do this motor f1 20000 rpm
wth he looks just like connor from detroit become human
The exception being model aircraft engines. A Cox TD .051 cu. in. 2 stroke engine in a speed control-line model aircraft turned at 28,746 rpm, at a fastest lap of 149.7 mph.
What the fuck do you think physics is if not nature? FYI, literally everything you mentioned is a limitation of physics.
We can use valves with macinical valves like piston like a rod added to the valves 🤣 pay me if you like the idea it's not for free
Better not tell the model airplane pylon racers whose engines rev to 32000! Full of BS.
Doesn't Ducati's desmodronic (spelling?) valve system solve the problem of valve float?
i would like to know something what does this mean for nitro rc and miniature engines they still have pistons and in some cases camshafts and valves that can rev over 20k my motor in my rc off road car has a rev limit of 31k some info would be great
Yeah, appreciate the information, but not so much the quips. You make a good lecturer, not a comedian.
My LRP ZZ.21c Ceramic .21 Long Stroke Nitro Engine hits 40,000 rpm
all this talk about things bouncing, and stopping and starting, and never one mention of the speed of sound... air has to get moving. air has to stop and start at valves and ports. air starts to reach transonic speeds and it stops flowing. its mach speeds in ports that start limiting top speeds. flame propagation doesnt create force. its not the FLAME that pushes the piston, its the PRESSURE INCREASE from adding HEAT. the pressure wave travels far faster than the chemical reaction at the flame front. if it propagates too fast, pressure rises too high, things fail like firecrackers in trashcans... if it propagates too slowly, the reduction in pressure due to the receding piston outweighs the increase of pressure from the addition of heat from burning fuel. like in detonation, the pressure increase affects areas of the fuel/air charge that are not in contact with the flame front, causing the entire charge to ignite with a sudden catastrophic increase in pressure. the pressure travels faster than the flame front itself.
Some super small nitro powered engines for model cars and airplanes can do around 37,000 rpm.
So, don't use a piston engine. Use an electric motor.
2:59 i need to know that songs name PLS
suck squeeze bang blow, never thought of it that way
A 200 dollar 3.5 cc rc engine revs over 40.000 RPM....
James Pumphrey needs his own channel.... This production group became so cringe-worthy when it grew into a content brand... can't follow the information now because of all the shitty memes being shoveled into any filler spot they can find in the video 🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️
2:22 to skip the AD... lost brain cells listening to the shilling
Lbs don't measure weight
Thanks so much for this great explanation. I think I now get it. And the little Jab at the end about trades with people having kids was brilliant.
um ..... the older F1 engines all did over 24K rpm so not (almost)impossible
If you think about it the real limit is piston speed, which can't exceed flame velocity and which affects friction and thus wear. So shorter stroke means higher revs. But once you get below about 50cc the friction losses and other inefficiencies start to become excessive. A 250cc 5 cylinder 20 valve engine would have the balance, short stroke and low valve lift to exceed 20000 rpm but fuel injection and, I think, emissions, would make it a non-starter.
How about wenkel concept engine?
So horizontal opposed supercharged two stroke is answer deisel type but with petrol injection
As a rotary boi, I was sad to hear this knowledge bomb doesn’t include us
I wonder if someone going at 100+ shift directly from 6th gear to 1st gear
Hahaha nice vid brahv. Good snark between informative content. "You're a tradeoff" LOL
that was an astounding bit of work. Could use less bs tho
The 1970's 50cc land speed record 2 stroke Kreidler produced peak power at 22,000 RPM.
Ducati valves missed...
hence toyota gt86 ... 86.0 x 86.0 mm (Bore x St roke) the engine sucks at low revs, but is wonderfull at high revs
dito xD lawlz
Well you can hit 30000 when you money shift But once
You're a little bit too late 😅 Honda did that in the 60's with the Honda RC116 2 cylinder 50cc motorcycle revving up to 21.500rpm 👍
you didn't have to tell me the last part :'( i already knew that but i also never asked to be born so its on them ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
I could easily make a car go 1000mph. step 1: buy a 1992 honda civic hatchback step 2: drive it to the equator step3: park it there...because the earth is spinning at 1000mph at the equator!!! BOOM!
Not even joking the traxxas trx 3.3 nitro R/C engine can rev to 50000 rpm, look it up. Such a tiny engine

Simple two-stroke engines can actually have rpm well above 20,000 . A model airplane engine can reach 30,000 and there are engines like these that reach even more. kgfun.info/losk/video/0HidoLaHgs-p08k

I liked this video just for the keeps ad. Update: the video was good too
You made a very fundamental error in the fuel system. The fuel injector does not "vaporise" the fuel at all. It is an electrically controlled jet, like that in a carburettor, though this jet is operated by a solenoid, which allows fuel to be sprayed into the intake under pressure from the fuel pump. The fuel is vaporised in the combustion chamber. Fuel sprayed from a fuel injector is visible, fuel vapor is NOT!!
boat motors rev at 4000to 5000 rpms
gas engine yes but straight 6 diesel engines can in dump truck an stuff try not to sell false info plz
